FumoniTest Columns

Fumonisins are mycotoxins produced by the fungus Fusarium moniliforme. Frequent, almost universal inhabitants of corn, Fumonisin B₁ and fumonisin B₂ are present in most corn samples tested, often at greater than 1 ppm.

The FDA/USDA Working Group on Fumonisin advises less than 5 ppm in horse feed, less than 10 ppm for swine feed and less than 50 ppm for cattle feed. Fumonisin is thought to cause equine leukoencephalomalacia in horses, swine pulmonary oedema, and human oesophageal cancer.

How to Use

• Extract Sample

• Grind and weigh sample

• Add salt and methanol/ water mixture

• Filter

• Dilute and Filter

• Dilute extract

• Filter

• Absorb and Elute

• Pass filtrate over FumoniTest affinity column

• Wash column with buffers

• Elute fumonisins and collect in cuvette

• Measure

• Add developers and place cuvette into a calibrated fluorometer, or

• Inject eluate into HPLC

• Determine fumonisin concentration

Using monoclonal antibody-based affinity chromatography, FumoniTest™WB is an HPLC-only test for the detection of fumonisins using wide bore immunoaffinity columns. 

With a total volume of 3 mL, compared to the total of 1 mL in VICAM’s standard columns, FumoniTest WB allows for the faster flow rate preferred by many laboratories and is the ideal cleanup step for any HPLC.
